Why do people who don't have to worry about money still end up miserable?
Why do the rich and famous commit suicide?
Why are celebrities make use of drugs, and are always in and out of rehab?
Why do the rich and famous act out, cause public disturbance and are always in and out of the courthouse or prison?
Over 80 millions of Nigerians live under the poverty line, so I am not surprised that our priority in life is securing our daily bread. For those 80 million people, a dream life would be a nice roof over their head, enough food to eat, nice clothes, a good car and a life where they don't have to worry about how they are going to pay the next bills.
Our entire existence is centered around making ends meet, so much that people are getting involved in criminal and fraudulent activities. Men and women of God are milking us dry through prosperity gospel. They promise us wealth in exchange for monetary offerings.
When this is your reality, you hardly think past the present day. As a matter of fact, I doubt that you can sit down and reflect on the other side of life. The life of those who have it all, and yet are still extremely unhappy.
The saying "money can't buy happiness" might have been abused by the poor and the hopeless to comfort and console themselves over their inability to rise above their socio-economical predicaments, but then there is still an element of truth in those proverbial words.
Money cannot buy happiness.
Money will buy you the biggest house, but it won't buy you the safety, warmth and sweetness of a home.
Money will buy you the most beautiful clothes, shoes and accessories, but it won't buy you the confidence you need to wear them.
Money will buy you the most expensive car, but it won't buy you destinations that make you feel alive.
Money will buy you the best therapists, but it won't buy you the intimate connection you have with a friend, family or a romantic partner.
Money will buy you a team of advisers, assistants and an elite circle, but it won't buy you the love, respect and loyalty of a friend.
We often joke about how children who grew up in extremely religious homes go wild the moment they evade their parents' prying eyes. And who can blame them? Their parents have done nothing but control every aspect of their lives since they were born. From what they wear, their friends, their beliefs, all the way to their thoughts. There was no bond between them. Just a puppet-puppeteer relationship.
When people are poor, they want to become rich. If they manage to become rich, some still end up with a sense of emptiness within them, an emptiness they might try to fill with drugs, alcohol, sex and medicines.
Housewives of the super rich of America make use of antidepressants more than any other group of people in the country. They gulp down pills as if they were sweets to try and feel better.
Money will certainly give us a good life, but it cannot give us a happy life.
You think that the reason why your child is acting out is because you cannot buy her that dress she wants?
Let me ask you, when was the last time you hugged her and told her that you love her? If you died today, besides the worry of having to fend for herself, will your child miss you in any other way?
