Dear Heterosexual Nigerian Man,

Today is Sunday. A day we all love because it is the day we get to chill, relax and think. And talking of thinking, there is this particular issue I would like us to discuss.

As you know, statistics show that men currently outnumber women in Nigeria by a staggering 2 million. We are still far behind the disparity in India and in China which registers in the tens of millions, but 2 million is still a figure that calls for concern and sensitivity.

Because I have the happiness of Nigerian men and women at heart and I want everybody to be able to find love and live happily ever after, I want to propose that we make a U-turn from the way the issue of marriage is currently being handled and redefine this institution based on these recent statistics.

NIGERIAN MEN MUST RID THEMSELVES OF SELFISHNESS

At the moment, men are still harbouring the desire to marry more than one woman. Let it be known that the moment a man marries a woman, 2 million men will be left without a future wife. What happens when that man goes on to take another wife? It means that one more man will be left without a future wife.

If we put the figure of men who are currently married to two or more women in the tens of thousands, that means that in addition to the current 2 million men who will never find a wife in Nigeria, an additional figure which ranges in tens of thousands of men have been left wifeless because some men are just too greedy.

What would it cost you to put your fellow man into consideration when you are making moves to marry another woman? Why can't you be your brother's keeper and give him hope? Are you an enemy of progress?

Just because you have money or because the women in your village are just too dumb to know their market value, does not mean that you can hoard all the eligible spinsters for yourself.

Please, drop this greed and selfishness today. Marry only one woman and give your fellow man the hope that they too can one day find fulfilment in marriage.

MEN MUST LEARN HOW TO SHARE

Nigerian men must come to terms with the new reality of facts: men outnumber women, so there aren't enough women for every man around.

In a society like ours, where marriage is considered one of the greatest achievements one can attain in life, we understand that we can't have 2 million men walking around without a wife and a family. We must take care of them.

And what other way to take care of them than to allow women to marry more than one man? Even if the woman decides that she doesn't want an additional husband, there is no reason why she can't keep the additional man as a side cock and take care of him as she would take care of her husband.

I believe that husbands and side cocks and co-exist in peace and accept all the children that will born into this arrangement as their own without much thought about who the real father is.

A man must understand that when his wife expresses the desire to marry another man, she is not doing so because she doesn't love him anymore or because he is not fulfilling his duties as a husband: it simply means that your wife is a humanitarian who can't stand to see a man who would make a great husband wasting away because there isn't any woman available for him.

The act of sharing and polyandry are the only ways we can overcome this crisis, as this shortage of women is not just a Nigerian issue, but a global issue. It is also an issue that won't go away in the next few years. It might take up to 50 years before we finally succeed in bridging the gap between men and women. Do we want to wait that long before we stop the harmful and counterproductive practise of polygyny and start engaging in the more reasonable and logical polyandry?

Only men who do not have their brothers happiness at heart will say no to these solutions. Men have never been men's enemies. Why would you want to start now?

Make a pledge today. Welcome your wife's side cock. Encourage your wife to take a second husband or a side cock. Share the love.

And the blessings of God will never ever depart your life.
