THE HIJAB IS NORMAL IN TANZANIA

Written on 20/03/2021

Lol. Muslims are like 23% of the Tanzanian population. Hijab ain’t a big deal in that country but trust one foolish man to reduce a president to her hijab in a country where almost a quarter of her citizens are Muslims.

This is not the same as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and her Ankara prints. The world is anti-black, anti-African and anti-woman. A black woman from Africa who dresses up in Ankara for business as the leader of WTO is a huge deal.

Kamara Harris being partly black and Hispanic, or Obama being partly black, is a big deal. These are respectively just the 13% and 16% of a population of over 300 million people in an extremely racist country.

What matters here is that Samia Suhulu is a woman. Tanzania is not an anti-Muslim country, but like most countries it’s anti-woman.

If Samia gets an international appointment one day, a position where she will be leading people of different ethnicities and religions, like NOI, then her hijab will matter.

And again her being a woman will matter. It’s always a big deal when a woman gets to lead anywhere there are men.
