A lady posted on Facebook that on her first date with a guy, he invited her to go and eat their food in his apartment, which is located nearby, as the eatery had become overcrowded. Upon arriving at his house, he tried to force himself on her. Believe it or not, most commenters blamed her.
The first time I went to Nigeria was also the first time I have ever met some of my Facebook friends. We had been interacting and chatting online. I posted here that I was in Nigeria and some of them asked us to link up.
Since it was my first time in Nigeria, they all did the visiting at the hotel where I was lodged. None of them was minimally scared of coming to see me at a hotel where they could potentially be alone with me. Nobody saw me as a threat.
Similarly, the lady in that story never said that the man was a stranger. He is not. They had been talking. It just happened that they had never met.
I have written about this hypocrisy that devours the souls of the average Nigerian. Now all of a sudden, no man has ever invited a woman he had been chatting with online to see him in his house at their first meeting. And no woman has ever agreed to such arrangement.
These are the same people that the moment we bring up the topic of rape, will start shouting "Not all men".
The problem here is not that the lady agreed to go to a person's house at their first meeting. The problem is that she agreed to go to a MAN's house. Even though they had met 1000 times before then, they'd have still found ways to blame her. It's the sex of the host, not the circumstances surrounding the incident.
If you can travel to go and do a stranger's make up at their house or in a hotel, if you can travel to go and cook or clean a stranger's house, if you can go to a person house without having met them before for any reason at all, then you are very silly for opening your mouth to blame the woman in that story.
It's either we agree that all Nigerian men are potential rapists or you quit being judgmental fools.
Because if the woman had been the one to invite the man over to hers and tried to force herself on him, nobody would be posing the question, "Why would he go to a stranger's house to eat N800 food". Instead you'd all be asking, what brand of madness is affecting her.
Ah, it's too early for this.
