Nigeria is failing as a state because the citizens are failing as individuals.
The strength of a building lies in the strength of the single brick. And that's why those bricks should be the most important investment. No matter how good the design is and how much work is put into erecting the structure, if the prime material is weak, the entire structure will eventually collapse.
Show me a country that is failing and I will show you a country that is not making use of her citizens. Greed has led our leaders to believe that a few can successfully run a nation and that a nation of ignorant is easier to lead.
The West learnt at their own peril what it meant to govern a country ridden by illiteracy, over-religiosity and silly cultural practices, which is why they started investing in education. Free education was not not just an act of justice; it was first and foremost, a strategy to make sure that at least 80% of the population would become productive at the completion of the equivalent of our secondary school.
Most of the billionaires in America did not even attend college and many others dropped out. Tell me, if that is not something to ponder on.
Nigeria gives so much importance to education, yet not everybody can afford it, some are even denied access, and the system is so bad and so corrupt that even the few who manage to push through public universities, have to rely on their personal abilities, because most of the time, these institutions do not give a hoot about them.
How can we succeed in raising confident citizens who will later go on to contribute to making the state greater?
The average Nigerian thrives on insecurity. Forget our loud mouths. That's just arrogance and arrogant people rarely have anything to show for it.
We need to start raising our children to be strong, assertive, independent and autonomous. Critical thinking is fundamental. A strong sense of individuality is even better than a university degree. Instill your children with confidence.
This is the only way we can save our country.
