One day I was struck by curiosity and decided to hear from the other side of the coin. I went on Youtube to watch anti-feminist videos. Well this very American woman made points that I think were just silly until one caught my attention. This was about child support.
I personally advocate for the right of a woman to choose whether or not she wants to carry on with a pregnancy. This choice does not have to involve her partner if she doesn't want to. In the case of a discordance, the woman's decision prevails and that's fine.
If a woman decides to abort, with or without the man's consent, she can.
But if she decides to keep the pregnancy, even without the man's consent, he ends up paying child support. That seems unfair to me.
I think no man should be forced to pay for a child he didn't choose to have. It's an imposition and a violation of his right to choose fatherhood as well.
If a woman can choose whether or not she wants to be a mother, a man should be recognised the same right.
I wrote this initially as a question for Women Without Religion and this was their response:
"If the man doesn't want to have a baby he should protect himself to ensure the woman doesn't get pregnant. It's his sperm, he needs to control it. If he can't, he shouldn't be putting his penis near another woman's ovaries. It's very simple. He has choices too. He can have a vasectomy, he can use a condom or he can choose not to have sex. He is responsible for his own actions as is the woman. However, once his viable sperm leaves his penis and enters her body, she is in charge of what happens to it."
I do not agree with this position because it is the same reason pro-lifers use against abortion: "If a woman doesn't want a baby she should protect herself or close her legs".
Isn't that hypocritical? We defend a woman's right to screw whomever she wants and, if she gets pregnant, to terminate the pregnancy, but a man has to close his conduct, use a condom or abstain to avoid being a father.
Motherhood and fatherhood should be a choice for both, not just for the woman.
