GEJ makes a good political theorist, but he makes a bad politician.
Jonathan is an educated and intellectual man and he behaves like any educated and intellectual man: because he knows a lot, he also thinks a lot and acts very little. The man has a lot of ideas on how Nigerian should be ruled. He has a list of all the things that do not function and has made plans on how to fix them. However there is a problem with this kind of organisation: he is fixated on his ideal way to fix Nigeria and does not take emergencies and insurgences into consideration, because that would mean the abrupt interruption of his bi-quadrennial plan to turn Nigerian into a new leaf.
GEJ would make a good counsellor. He should be relegated to the role of a wing man, but he does not make a good leader. The man knows exactly where Nigeria is damaged and he could fix it, but he lacks the temperament to make decisions. He is being idealistic about everything. Imagine him saying "Boko Haram are our brothers". In the ideal world, when a brother misbehaves, you talk him into changing his ways, but in the real world, when your brother butchers his other brothers, you take a cutlass and cut off his hands. You may not kill him, but you make sure he can never hurt anyone again. We need people like Jonathan in Nigeria; he is cultured and aware, but he should stay in the background and guide; He does not belong in the spotlight.
If Jonathan had the same temperament of Buhari, he would make the perfect leader. But he belongs on a desk with plenty of ink and paper. He could write books and books about our country and I would not mind reading them. I would even advocate for these books to be read in schools and used in university courses like Political Science.
You know what they say: those who can't do it, teach it.
PS: I am not saying Buhari is a better option. But a fusion of both personalities would be the idea. Buhari is way too old for this country. We need a fresh blood like GEJ, but with character and temperament. Nigerians are too indisciplined and uncultured to be rule according to some idealistic ideas. They need someone who will tell them to sit and pin them down by their shoulders when they refuse. Jonathan would probably be begging them to sit.
